Child benefit for children born before 2020
For Walloon children born before 2020, the old child benefit system will continue to apply. As long as they are entitled to child benefit, they will continue to receive the old amounts.
- Have you moved from abroad and do you have children born before 1 January 2020? Then you are entitled to the old amounts in Wallonia.
- Children born before 2019, who after an interruption are entitled to child benefit again or who become an orphan after 1 January 2020 will keep their amounts from the old system.
New:
- Since 2019, the rules for granting social supplements under the new system apply. These also apply to all low-income families, and not only in the event of unemployment, disability or single-parent families. This might entitle you to a supplement, whereas before 2019 this was not the case.
- Students born after 01/01/2001 automatically retain their entitlement to child benefit up to the age of 21 years without justification, through for example a school certificate.
- The orphan's supplement is granted even if the surviving parent is cohabiting.
The old Walloon child benefit system in figures:
If you have children that were born before the 1st of January 2020, then they are still entitled to the amounts of the old system. But what does the total amount of your child benefit consist of?
The amounts of the Walloon child benefits are linked to the Belgian health index. When the health index is exceeded, the social benefits rise accordingly. This means that the amounts of the Walloon child benefits follow the increase. This index was last exceeded in November 2022. The amounts mentioned here are therefore the amounts paid since December 2022 (paid beginning of January 2023).
The law stipulates that your child benefit must be on your account at the latest on the 8th calendar day of the following month. Would you like to know the exact dates? Take a look at our page with payment dates.
